 Like any art form, music is better appreciated when you understand what exactly it is that you are experiencing. Music is elusive- it exists only in sound, floating in the ether, yet at the same time music is recognized by thinkers as diverse as Thomas Carlyle and Marcel Proust (to name only two) to be the art form best able to express the inexpressible. Learn about the lives of the great composers who wrote the immortal music and about the pieces themselves- what was their inspiration, how they are formed and of what musical material- and what to listen for in each piece. Maestro Robertson also places each piece in its historical, cultural and artistic context, the milieu in which the composer lived and worked- how his compositions were fashioned out of those diverse influences and how in turn our world was shaped by the true artist’s creations.
