1. Where were you born? Tell us a little about your youth and upbringing?
I was born in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Both of my parents love music. My mom wanted to become an opera singer but never had the chance. My father plays some instruments and sings, also an artist. They wanted me to be a musician since I was born.
2. Earliest musical memories?
I have always loved music and I can repeat songs right after I hear it. My mom told me that I was always singing and jumping around when I was little. I used to sit in front of the radio and listen to all Russian songs.
3. Your education? Where did you attend college, primary teachers?
I went to Sichuan Conservatory of Music when I was 11 years old, but studied with my teacher Hu Weiming since I was 5. He is one of the most well-known violin teachers in China.
4. Why did you choose your instrument?
I actually played piano at first, but my piano teacher had to move back to his hometown to be with his family. I switched to violin. My father always loved the violin, he said it sounds like a beautiful singer singing.
5. When did you know you wanted to be a professional musician?
When I started to play jazz, blues, & rock music with local bands in college.
6. Who were/are your most important musical influences?
I love all different kinds of music in violin. One of my father's friends gave me a recording of Stephane Grappelli when I was 7. I was so impressed with what he can do with the violin and how beautiful the music is.
7. Most inspiring composers?
Claude Debussy- Everything he wrote is like an amazing painting. It is just so colorful.
Sergei Prokofiev - One of the best storytelling composer ever.
8. What would you be if not a musician?
A Mathematician. I loved math when I was young. But I choose music school instead of AP math course.
9. Your favorite thing about playing in the ACO?
It is such a nice group of musicians and people. It makes me feel good playing with a great group.
10. With what other ensembles do you perform/where do you teach?
Different Orchestras around South Florida. It changes.
11. What is in your CD player right now?
Jorge Dexler- An amazing singer from Uruguay and I met him while I was on tour in Peru in May.
12. What do you like to do outside of work/hobby/pastime(s)?
I love movies. I can watch up to 5 movies a day. I also love traveling. Seeing different culture and people makes me value life more.
13. Anything else particularly interesting or enlightening you would like to share?
Thank you for having me with ACO. I love the orchestra and get to play all the cool music pieces.
