Meet the Musicians - Matt Barwegen

1.  Where were you born? Tell us a little about your youth and upbringing.

I was born in Bourbonnais, IL about one hour south of Chicago.

2.  Earliest musical memories.

Singing in church at a very young age.

3.  Your education? Where did you attend college, primary teachers?

I have a degree in Psychology from Wheaton College.  Primary teachers include Arthur Lewis, Jodi Levitz, Rami Salamonov, and Ralph Fielding.

4.  Why did you choose your instrument?

My sister played violin and my brother played cello.

5.  When did you know you wanted to be a professional musician?

After college.

6.  Who were/are your most important musical influences?

My teachers, vocalists, such as opera singers and church vocalists growing up.

7.  Most inspiring composers?

Bartok, Mozart, Glass, Adams.

8.  What would you be if not a musician?

Salesman, Psychologist.

9.  Your favorite thing about playing in the ACO?

The high quality of music-making.

10.  With what other ensembles do you perform/where do you teach?

Still looking.

11.  What is in your CD player right now?

A mix of alternative music from a Seattle radio station.

12.  What do you like to do outside of work/hobby/pastime(s)?

Physical exercise, swimming, general information junkie.

13.  Anything else particularly interesting or enlightening you would like to share?
