Meet the Musicians - Jonah Kim

1.   Where were you born? Tell us a little about your youth and upbringing.

Seoul, Korea.

2.  Earliest musical memories?

Recuerdos del Alhambra- guitar music.

3.  Your education? Where did you attend college, primary teachers?

Juilliard and Curtis.  Janos Starker, Lynn Harrell, Orlando Cole, Pete Wiley.

4.  Why did you choose your instrument?

Singing qualities.

5.  When did you know you wanted to be a proessional musician?

When Janos Starker told me I could play the cello.

6.  Who were/are your most important musical influences?

Bach, Casals, Kreisler.

7.  Most inspiring composers?

Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok.

8.  What would you be if not a musician?

Poet.

9.  Your favorite thing about playing in the ACO?

Making music.

10.  With what other ensembles do you perform/where do you teach?

Curtis Alums, Juilliard Alums, my trio in Paris.

11.  What is in your CD player right now?

John Eliot Gardiner's Complete Beethoven Symphony cycle.

12. What do youlike to do outside of work/hobby/pastime?

Eat, read, etc..

13. Anything else particularly interesting or enlightening you would like to share?

Knowledge => Control => problems....so just let nature take its course.
