Meet the ACO Musicians - Diane Weisberg


1.  Where were you born?  Tell us a little about your youth and upbringing.

Alhambra, California - near Los Angeles.

2.  Earliest musical memories?

Whistling in my sandbox.

3.  Your education?  Where did you attend college, primary teachers?

University of California at Berkeley - BA  Prof. Naomi Fisher, Felix Khuner

Yale School of Music - MM  Prof. Karen Tuttle

Arizona State University - DMA  Prof. Raphael Hillyer, William Magers

4.  Why did you choose your instrument?

I picked viola because it was more of a challenge than violin, as I already read treble clef since I played piano.

5.  When did you know you wanted to be a professional musician?


Sometime in college.

6.  Who were/are your most important musical influences?

Teachers listed above, plus Michael Santuria (college orchestra director) and my husband Arthur.

7.  Most inspiring composers?

So many!  Bach, Beethoven, Brahms of course, Mahler, Mozart, Bartok, Weisberg.

8.  What would you be if not a musician?

Pastry Chef

9.  Your favorite thing about playing in the ACO?

The high level of musicianship.

10.  With what other ensembles for you perform/where do you teach?

 Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, Palm Beach Symphony, Boca Symphonia.  I teach at FAU and private studio.

11.  What is in your CD player right now?

Bach violin sonatas and partitas.

12.  What do you like to do outside of work/hobby/pastimes?

Gardening, reading.

13.  Anything else particularly interesting or enlightening you would like to share?

I am very proud of my sons, John (a fine oboe player) and Seth (a budding Neuroscientist).
